Sector: Sacred
Location: New York, NY
Scope: Architectural Design; Historic Preservation
Project Type: Detailed Exterior Restorations; Mechanical Systems; Acoustics
Status: Ongoing

ADP’s ongoing partnership with St. Bartholomew’s Church began in 2008 with a thorough report on existing conditions examining the architectural, structural, and mechanical systems of the historic church property on Park Avenue. Issues were identified pertaining to the church entryway, exterior drainage, mechanical systems, interior acoustics, and iconic dome.

Given the deteriorated condition of the marble cladding material and the dome’s underlying terracotta tile arch, steel, and masonry structure, the restoration of the dome was a vital project. Infiltration of water threatened the integrity of the dome’s steel tension ring, therefore requiring existing materials testing and selection of replacement marble and terracotta tile material. The result was a historically accurate restoration of the highest order.

Commanding a significant religious and civic presence on Park Avenue, the dome at St. Bart’s was lovingly restored to its original brilliance. Each terracotta tile was traced and documented by the ADP design team and carefully recreated by artisans down to its original color, shape and mortar setting.
